Halloween Journal Challenge
Greetings ghosts and ghouls – enter if you dare!!
Welcome to the annual #HalloweenJournalChallenge, where we celebrate all things autumnal and spooky in the pages of our journals.
What is the Halloween Journal Challenge? The HJC is an annual creative journaling challenge that I host on Instagram and YouTube every single October. It’s is a creative, spooky, communal celebration of all things art journaling and Halloween – it really is the best time of the year!
There is one prompt for every day in October (this year’s prompts have a ‘light & dark’ twist, with 2 prompts every 2 days – see below for more info!) Interpret each prompt in your journal, using whichever medium or style you’d like. Create a page every single day or dip in and out of the prompts as you please – it’s up to you!
Share your work using the hashtag(s) #HalloweenJournalChallenge #HJC23 so the HJC community can all find and support each other’s spooky work. As many entries as possible will be shared on @InspiringJournals!
Remember the most important rule: Enjoy yourself!
2024 YouTube Collaboration: a new ‘journal with me’ video for every day of the month! Each video by a different creator about that day’s HJC prompt, giving you Halloween journaling inspo galore!
Begins Oct 1st.
Spooky stickers: My little online shop is bursting with handmade autumnal and spooky stickers, paper, and printables just waiting for you to add them to your journal! Use code HJC10 for a special 10% off any orders over 5.00 in celebration of the Halloween Journal Challenge commencing!
Be part of the 2024 YouTube Collaboration for Halloween Journal Challenge:
Many wonderful YouTube creators have joined together to bring you a journaling video for every prompt! Every day in October, a different creator will upload a ‘journal with me’ video in their style for that day’s prompt. Each day’s video will be released at 6pm BST and will be added to the Halloween Journal Challenge 2024 playlist, which you can find on on my YouTube Channel, here, once October begins.
Details of each creator will be released soon! We still have a few gaps to fill so if you have a YouTube channel where you post art/journaling videos and you’d like to join in by creating a video, please let me know by filling in this form.
How does the journal challenge work?
Usually, the HJC consists of 31 creative journaling prompts, one to follow along with for every day in October!
The idea is to interpret the daily prompts in your own way, creating a single page or double spread in your journal based on each prompt, using whatever medium or style you’d like. Whether you’re into bullet journaling, creative journaling, sketchbooking, scrapbooking or something else. You can interpret the Halloween journal prompts in your usual style or use them to experiment with new journaling styles.
2024 ‘Light & Dark’
For a fun twist, our prompts this year are split into ‘light & dark’ or ‘Day & night’. There are two prompts for every two days, so you can choose whether to pick the light or dark side, making one spread every couple of days, or, if you’d like more of a daily challenge, work on all the prompts – one for each day!
Sharing is caring!
Most participants share their journal spreads on Instagram using the hashtag #HalloweenJournalChallenge so we can all find inspiration and support each other’s work. There’s a lovely sense of a cozy Halloween journaling community throughout October, and it’s growing every year! Many HJC entries are reshared on @inspiringjournals, where over 100k journal-loving followers can find and interact with them.
The 31st October journal flip through tradition…
On the last day of October, it’s a HJC tradition for the final prompt to be “Flip through”. This is a chance for participants to upload a video flipping through all the amazing art they’ve created for the challenge! The community gets really excited to see each other’s work encompassed like this, it’s an amazing chance to look back & be proud of everything we’ve created.
The most important rule…
Let yourself enjoy it! Yes, this is supposed to be a challenge, but it is also supposed to be inspiring and fun, so I always encourage participants to take their time if you need to. (It’s almost tradition at this point for me to be the last one to finish the prompts even though I’m the host, haha!)
