My step-by-step junk journal making tutorial is finally here!

All you lovely people have been asking me for years to show you how I make my handmade junk journals. To be honest I never quite fancied recording a video about it before because my process is fun and messy, I go into a little trance when I handmake junk journals and it always put me off to imagine setting up my camera and tripod to record it. Not to mention, I was worried I would be judged for the ‘perfectly imperfect‘ result of my slightly haphazard mixed media junk journal making process.

That being said, while I was creating some journals for the upcoming Halloween Journal Challenge, inspiration finally struck! The timing felt right, so I recorded a step-by-step tutorial on how to make a handmade junk journal for you. I hope you like it!

If you are someone who prefers to refer back to written instructions, feel free to save this image!

This is a simple explanation of the pamphlet stitch I am using to sew my junk journals in this video. I created this tutorial for the series of kids’ activity books I wrote and illustrated for Collins Kids called My Awesome Year Being 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 – available now at Collins.co.uk and other major book retailers.

These instructions will help you understand the basics of pamphlet stitch for making a journal with one signature (one group of pages) – once you feel comfortable with that it is easy to make a journal with three signatures or more! Check out the image below…

The lines marked on this image show you where to repeat the pamphlet stitch in three lines for your three journal signatures. Be sure to watch the video above to see a walk through (and talk through!) of exactly how it is done.
